I just watched Star wars Episode III Revenge of the Sith for the first time since I watched it at like 12. It’s so good but also such a tragic story, fuck George Lucas did Anakin dirty lol
My main takeaways are mainly that integrating deep themes of human psychology through the plot and character development of the main characters makes for a deep viewing experience and clearly a world class IP. George Lucas was deeply inspired by Joseph Campbell and his magnum opus : The hero with a thousand faces. He went so far as to call him his own Master Yoda.
You guys might be familiar with the Hero’s journey, this the man that came up with the concept.
Also soundtrack is phenomenally important for a deep viewing experience. The Star Wars theme was composed by John Williams and played by the London Symphony Orchestra so its both world class music combined with cool space knights that lead to Star Wars becoming the titan it is now.
The Faustian bargain of Darth Sidious and how they show him slowly Grooming Anakin is so brilliantly portrayed and sad to watch. The ruined love story of Anakin and Padme is one of the saddest stories in Cinema history for sure.
It’s also so interesting how Disney took over the IP and is now spawning multiple side franchises from it ala Marvel Cinematic Universe. Going to watch the Obi Wan show next, super excited.
This is a good essay by a long time Star Wars fan on his issues with how Disney has handled the IP. I don’t agree with his conclusion but will learn everything I can from both Disney and Marvel on how to create a multimedia IP and hopefully it will one day make Legend of the Abyss the greatest IP of all time and surpass Star Wars and Pokemon themselves.
